christmas for 2thousand and eight

well all the hub bub is over and it's nice to relax and take that deep breath
i'm remembering and in a glow of the week of christmas.
this year was one to remember.
makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
a week full of adventures and events.
great times, amazing friends and SNOW (and lots of it)
two concerts consisting of some good musicians (dears, tokyo police club, metric, this crazy band, dammit i can't remember their name right now that opened for kid koala, oh and kid koala)
the polar bear dip, fireworks, snowball fights in the streets, taking pictures, good food, apple pie, champagne, lots of laughter, crazy russians wanting big knives...
what more can anyone ask for?
well i had fun.

dreams

so what's the deal about dreams?
what are they?
where do they come from and how do they exist?
we dream about thoughts, events that we've seen or done or hoped or just about something so obscure.
sometimes it just seems all so random.
why dogs dream?
what do they dream about?
you know that they are dreaming.
with the twitching and talking and running
you know somethings happening
so do they have creative imaginations too?
do all living creatures dream then?
and if so, what are they dreaming about?
what are YOU dreaming about?

living inside a snow globe

something about the first couple times it snows...
you feel warm and cozy and special (yes i said special)
and it's so quiet
this morning i laid in bed watching snowflakes float past my window
and listened to the nothingness
i don't know how to describe the sound of nothingness
but, it sounds like snow falling
ah snow
in a day or two
it will be dishevelled and marked with footprints and pee stains and salt
it will be half melted off the trees and the roof tops
leaving us with dirty slush that froze again and cold
and just like that the magic is gone
until next year when it first snow falls again

smmmm..ART

Art is such an interesting thing.
to have an idea.
as random as it may be...
or not.
it is a vision.
and you created it
you make an idea, a thought, come true
to fruition and make it real!
real, into something you can see or hear or touch
and feel
is it not like magic?
i find it amazing

bambooozle

okay more bamboo stuff. what can't you make out of bamboo?
I have a t shirt made out of bamboo, i have a skateboard made of bamboo... and well i guess there's a hell of a lot more things you can make out of this resilient plant.
according to Wikipedia it is the fastest growing plant on this earth!
also when treated, bamboo forms to a very hard wood which is both lightweight and exceptionally durable.
bamboo is also used in chinese medicines to treat infections, it's a low calorie source of potassium, apparently a sweet wine is made from the young stalks tapped in rainy season, pickled bamboo is used as a condiment, but although many are edible, there is a Giant bamboo that contains cyanide!
Anyhoo... bamboo.
who knew?

Chop chop sticking

So in the past few years i had started bringing my own chopsticks whenever i go out for sushi. some friends shake their heads like i'm some nerd. but really, and seriously...
In China alone, 45 BILLION chopsticks are thrown out a year! 25 million trees are destroyed!! Would you not find it strange if you went out to a nice restaurant and for cutlery, you would get disposable plastic fork and knife? So why is it ok with chopsticks?
Seriously.

not your typical art

alright kids. some new and very interesting things i have found to look at.... if you're interested.

this guys leaves little toy people around london, uk in orchestrated positions, hoping and wondering if anyone would see his small art around the city. before leaving them, he captures the piece on camera. check it out

http://little-people.blogspot.com/

this site i thought was neat. it's comprised of a series of deleted photography. this is why i always keep all my photos that i take, good or bad. sometimes the most interesting things of art is not a clear and perfect picture, but rather the space and colour and non literal being of the composition. anyhoo... here's the site.

i like this because it's just fun. also gets you to stop and step back and find something different and humour in our everyday environments. this is a compilation of photographs of faces in everyday objects.

thanksgiving indeed

it's 3am.
three oh four am to be exact.
I should be sleeping, but i can't.
i lye in bed with a ridiculous smile and the faint sounds of chatter and laughter of my friends still ringing in my head.

i love thanksgiving.
it is my favourite holiday.
it's this holiday, where it's not about gifts or expectations.
it's this great holiday, where we are to step back, look and reflect about life and how and what we are thankful for.
i love my friends.
thanksgiving.
good food and drink, bringing wonderful friends together for laughter and company.
who couldn't love thanksgiving?
I sure do. all the things i love.
it's my favourite!

art with and within words

i think sometimes the most interesting things can be from something so ordinary. just black and white. it's all about the space used or not used and how its plays around and within.... i don't know, that's just me, i could just be talking shit...what do i know. here's an interesting artist that makes art out of old books. it reminded me of back in a time where i had this book of cross word puzzles and at night once i completed a puzzle, i would draw a picture on top. it was my strange ritual of completing a puzzle. i still have the book..... somewhere......

Recycled words
"I rescue, salvage, and recycle other people’s words.

Browsing through garage sales, street markets and used bookstores I search for interesting, preferably discarded, old books. When I find a good candidate I explore every page. Like an archeologist I hunt for the words that speak to me with new meaning. Intuitively, one word at a time, they turn into a kind of haiku or philosophical poetry that I can call my own.

At some unpredictable point along the way, in my mind, the images start to invent themselves. Using colored vellums, graphite and or India ink to highlight or obscure my words; I create the image of that invention. Though I strive to make each document visually engaging I find it is the words that I value most.

The majority of this work comes from several different copies of The Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson printed from 1887 to 1927. Something about working with these pages quietly reminds me that a part of our culture is about recycling ideas."

in the depths of art..

BROOKS SALZWEDEL- here is an artist i've stumbled upon that really caught my eye. this artwork is made of layered resin pieces to create surreal depths. anyways, i thought that they were pretty amazing and wished i thought of the idea!!
I give it a very VERY cool!!

brookssalzwedel.com

the artist’s own words, from NY Arts Magazine Interview: “With the use of transparencies, including vellums, acetates, tape and resin, I see my work in layers. I ask myself what images should be in the foreground, and what images should recede to the back. I want all my pieces to have an overwhelming feeling of depth. A good piece, for instance, will have faded fog in the background, but still show detail in both its foreground and background. Most of the time, a piece will be a surprise to me, once I pull the resin out of its mold. The layers change—some images will become dull, while some will become crisp—which helps me feel like I’m not working in some formulaic way. It’s all still an experiment and so creates accidents.”

dreams

here's a little story of a dream i had the other night....

i had a dream last night and you were in it.
you had friends that had a comedy sketch show and you would
occasionally guest appear on it.
I was watching the videos on youtube or something like the such,
laughing away.
you were a pretty good actress!
funny too.
i got so caught up in watching these shows, that i forgot about my
rice i was cooking and it burned.
well not badly, but it did have that burnt rice taste.
not so good.
anyways. that was my dream from last night,
and you were in it.

morning theme songs

so every morning when i wake, generally, most of the time, have a song in my head. it's a random thing. sometimes they are old songs i didn't think i even knew.
well this is my song for today. it's actually a decent song that i like, from death cab.

i love nerds!

I love nerds.
but lets all not be mistaken.
there are two kinds of nerds.
there are nerds that hidden geniuses with creativity and humour and are just so damn cool because of there nerdiness.
and then there are nerds that are true blue nerds that are boring and not innovative with the smarts they have.
I don't know how else to describe the difference between the two.... but i know, you know what i'm talking about right?

speaking of cool interesting nerds, i went to see one of my favourite djs last night at the commodore ballroom. mike relm. discovered him years ago when i went to see another concert and he opened, and well i've become a true fan since then. not only does he scratch records and manipulate sounds, but he simultaneously adds visual stimulation via similarly manipulated video footage. mike relm scratches and mixes a variety of music as well as scratches dvds. taking pieces of sounds to create brilliant beats and rhythms matching up with the music. this also creates an inventive imagery. one big hilarious, amazing multimedia mash of sight and sound that will put your brain into a bit of a whirl! he is quick with his cuts and cleaver and funny with the footage he chooses. I usually dance and laugh my ass off all night, every time!

anyways some footage from the concert last night.... footage never gives the real live stuff the justice of how it was, but it's a nice taste. Ah good times. good memories.

and old footage of a set cut into one, just to get a flava...

a rainy foggy day in vancouver. care to go for a swim?

my plastic monster

so I have a friend that is the queen of recycling. she has found a plant in our city that will accept all the plastics that don't go into the blue box. so i collect most of the plastic at my work. here is a few weeks worth of plastic waste that will now be recycled.
ladies and gentlemen this is my plastic monster....

some interesting art

Kazue Taguchi.
a japanese artist that uses mirrors and reflective materials to create a complex interplay of reflections and shadows.
very VERY cool.

http://www.kazuetaguchi.com/english/index.html

Kazue Taguchi: “Like sound, feeling, imagination and memory, light is invisible and intangible, but its effect on our live is profound. My interest in creating works with light is in experiencing the phenomenon of their visual qualities as well as in the creation of a relaxing and sublime space.”

i love you miso

Miso (みそ or 味噌?) is a traditional Japanese food produced by fermenting rice, barley and/or soybeans, with salt and the fungus kōjikin (麹菌?) (the most typical miso is made with soy). The typical result is a thick paste used for sauces and spreads, pickling vegetables or meats, and mixing with dashi soup stock to serve as miso soup called Misoshiru (味噌汁?), a Japanese culinary staple. High in protein and rich in vitamins and minerals, miso played an important nutritional role in feudal Japan. Miso is still very widely used in Japan, both in traditional and modern cooking, and has been gaining world-wide interest. Miso is typically salty, but its flavor and aroma depend on various factors in the ingredients and fermentation process. Different varieties of miso have been described as salty, sweet, earthy, fruity, and savoury, and there is an extremely wide variety of miso available.

for all you m.c. escher fans

four winged dinosaur from china

the other night on the discovery channel, i learned about a four winged dinosaur discovered in china.

A stunning set of six fossils discovered in China could rewrite our understanding of how and why birds first took to the sky. The fossils clearly show a small dinosaur that had flight feathers covering its legs, as well as tail and arms, forming an extra pair of wings never before seen by palaeontologists.

wanna meet?
